Spectroscopic observations have been made with the Anglo-Australian Telescope of 31 objects selected as compact galaxies from UK Schmidt Telescope plates. Three of the objects were shown to be galactic stars superimposed on distant galaxies; finding charts for the remaining 28 are given. The galaxies belong to the same population as Zwicky's compact galaxies but lie at nearly twice the distance. There is no evidence for a population of local but more compact galaxies. The discovery is reported of a compact galaxy which may have broad forbidden Fe VII emission and of another with a Type 1 Seyfert spectrum.
