The capacity of global electric power systems will need to be increased tenfold by the year 2050. Conventional terrestrial energy systems will not be able to meet such needs, conventional systems often contribute to environmental and ecological problems for the planet and its inhabitants. Solar power collected on the moon is one possible 21st Century solution that may prove economically robust and environmentally supportive. The Lunar Power System (LPS) would collect solar power by large area, thin-film photovoltaics, convert this into thousands of low intensity microwave beams which are transmitted via shared, large diameter synthetic apertures to receivers anywhere on earth. The development of this LPS macroproject would require extensive lunar industrial facilities. This would offer unique market opportunities for communication technologists. That would be among the most difficult challenges of this type of macro undertaking.
