Payne-Gaposhkin (1973) has first studied the distribution of stars of Population I in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as a function of age. The results imply that the star formation rate is subject to pronounced local and temporal fluctuations. However, Ardeberg (1976) obtains a nearly uniform history of star formation in all areas of the LMC. Ardeberg's results are based on a consideration of certain supergiants. The present study is concerned with a new investigation of the distribution of stars as a function of age in the LMC. Improvements with respect to the earlier studies are related to an increase in the observational data, advances regarding stellar color determination on the basis of photoelectric photometry, a more precise age determination on the basis of improved stellar evolution calculations, and the compilation of the data for supergiants and Cepheids.
