Supernovae can be used to determine expansion parallaxes. The parallaxes depend on temperature and angular diameters of the SN. Errors of the angular diameter caused by uncertainties of the temperature have been analyzed using a spherical gray extended atmosphere. The velocity at the photosphere has been determined from line profiles. Hydrogen Balmer line profiles have been used for an analysis of SN 1983 in NGC 1448. The results of this study are discussed under the aspect of distance determination. It has been found that expansion parallaxes are only useful if the temperature estimates and the determination of the photospheric radius are very accurate.
