This paper comments on the Liu and Cao (1991) research note which states that prior studies on the orientation of the principal axes of the earth did not provide explicit derivations and expressions. It is shown here that the derivations provided by these authors were already presented by Hotine (1960), well before the availability of reliable artificial satellite data. It is also noted that the final angular expression for determining the earth's principal directions, derived by Liu and Cao are practically identical to the equation derived by Bursa (1983). Other significant omissions by Liu and Cao are pointed out.
