The most widely accepted hypothesis regarding the origin of comets, that they arose as part of the early solar system, were ejected to large distances, and are now being returned to the neighborhood of the sun through random gravitational perturbations by stars or interstellar clouds, is criticized on scientific methodological grounds. In particular, it is argued that the hypothesis violates Occam's razor by needlessly multiplying assumptions. In its place, a mechanism for the origin of comets is proposed which involves the sun encountering an interstellar grain or parcel of gas, causing this material to collide and concentrate, forming comets. The application of this hypothesis to explain the fuzzy appearance of comets, the streak appearance of sun-grazers near perihelion passage and meteor showers is shown.
