Consideration is given to the theory that organic molecules were transported to earth by comets or interplanetary dust particles. Comet evolution is reviewed, emphasizing the way in which cometary dust particles escape from the comet nucleus. The D/H isotope ratio of comets is compared with the ratio for meteorites and the earth's oceans, focusing on the possibility a cometary impact was responsible for the appearance of water on the earth. Also, studies of the chemical composition of cometary dust particles are examined, noting the proposed Cometary Rendezvous Asteroid Flyby and Rosetta missions to study the organic composition of comets.
