This study uses the many estimations of cometary magnitudes and coma sizes collected on the web page of the Commission des Comètes de la Société Astronomique de France (SAF). While we expect the light curves plotted on logaritmic scales to follow straight lines, they show a 'break' at some distance from the sun (about 1,6AU). From that point, the luminosity is growing at lower speed. A formula is proposed to estimate the loss of magnitude. Interestingly, the size of the coma seems to show a 'break' at the same distance. This descriptive study does not try to explain the origin of the phenomenon.
