Results arrived at by indirect methods (meteor trail observations, color measurements, infrared observations, polarization measurements, theoretical studies of cometary dust trails) and direct analysis of individual particles released from space probes are examined for inferences on the physical and chemical properties of cometary dust particles. The relationship between cometary and meteoritic matter, observations of meteors and comets, mass loss due to nongravitational forces, and the mechanical theory of cometary tails are discussed. Inferences on the elemental composition and isotope ratios of comet tail material are considered.
