The collision of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with the planet Jupiter, expected to occur beginning on July 20, 1994, in a string of approximately 22 massive chunks over a six-day period, is discussed. The collision is expected to yield clues to the composition of both Jupiter's atmosphere and the big comet. Military nuclear weapons designers can use the event to verify computer models of what a huge bomb would do. Catastrophic theorists will study the collision for implications relative to an asteroid or comet impact on Earth. Planetary climate specialists will use the crash to further the theory that Earth's climate would undergo a drastic change if a large comet or asteroid hit it.
