A three-phase mission to Mars whose aim is to explain the origin and evolution of the solar system and the origin of life on earth is proposed. The first phase will involve a global mapping of Mars in a wide spectral band to select areas with signs of biological activity; the second phase will involve a detailed investigation of the selected areas; and the third will involve collection of soil samples and delivery to earth. Mission profiles of each of these phases are given, with particular attention paid to the third phase.
