It is pointed out that the positive ion chemistry of the lower ionosphere is much better understood than the chemistry of negative ions. However, there remain unresolved problems. In particular, it is not clear which role meteoric metal compounds play in the chemistry of positive cluster ions. Details concerning the growth processes of positive cluster ions are also not well understood. In connection with the objective to study these problems, an improved rocket-borne quadrupole mass spectrometer capable of measuring both positive and negative ions was flown into the lower ionosphere. The present investigation is concerned with the positive ion data obtained in this study. The data reveal the presence of various positive ion species which have not been observed previously. The total positive ion concentration profile is shown in a graph.
