To better understand the relationship between supernova remnants (SNRs) and the origin of cosmic rays in external galaxies, it is necessary to examine both discrete thermal and non-thermal radio sources in these galaxies (as revealed by VLA observations) simultaneously with the large-scale structures resident in these galaxies (as revealed by single-dish Effelsberg observations). We present maps made of four nearby galaxies -- M33, IC 1613, NGC 2403 and NGC 6946 -- at the two wavelengths of 6 and 20 cm. These maps were assembled by combining observations from an interferometer (the VLA) and a single-dish instrument (the Effelsberg radio telescope). These observations are part of a larger project to catalog SNRs in nearby galaxies, and to characterize their environments. The maps themselves, with initial results and tentative conclusions, will be presented and discussed.
