The first high-latitude measurements using the ground-based version of the MIPAS Fourier transform spectrometer are reported. Results are reported for the tropospheric source gases CH4 and N2O as well as of the stratospheric trace species HCl, HF, an HNO3 at high northern latitudes. Time series are presented which show that two periods can be identified which are different both dynamically and chemically. The first is characterized by a very cold lower stratosphere remaining well below 195 K, by low column amounts of long-lived trace gases and a rapid decrease of their mixing ratio profiles in the lower stratosphere and by very low HCl/HF ratios. These results are generally consistent with downward vertical transport of air and a strongly perturbed stratospheric chemistry. The second period is characterized by more standardlike profiles for the long-lived trace gases. The stratospheric chemistry still seems to be perturbed during this period.
