Color variations exhibited by BL Lac during the outburst of 1997 were observed to be correlated with magnitude. Specifically, BL Lac was observed to become bluer as it brightened. This observed trend may be due to an intrinsic color change of the variable point source with changing magnitude. Another explanation for the correlation is that the underlying galaxy, which is red relative to the embedded point source, contributes a greater fraction of the light when the point source is fainter. Efforts to remove the influence of the underlying galaxy on observed color variations are reported here.
