The coupled states method was used, together with an interaction potential calculated for the HCN-He system by Green and Thaddeus (1974), in order to evaluate rate coefficients for the rotational excitation of HCN with the inclusion of nuclear spin. Cross sections were evaluated over the 0-100/cm range of energies for all rotational levels, up to and including j = 5. Calculated values for the components of each j = 0 - j-prime transition were found to closely follow the ratios of the final state degeneracies at all energies, although this was not generally the case.
