The mechanisms responsible for the fine structure of Saturn's rings are investigated by means of computer simulations, assuming that the ring dynamics is entirely determined by the collisions of frontally and tamgentially inelastic particles and taking nonlocality and spin into account. The derivation of the model equations and collision terms is presented in detail, and the thermal-balance results are shown in graphs. It is found that thermal equilibrium is possible only for optical depths less than about 0.7 and under certain relations between the particle velocity and the coefficient of restitution.
