Artificial Satellites: Collisions

Scientific paper

Collision probabilities between certain pairs of Earth-orbiting satellites are calculated, and it is shown that the major risk to objects in low-Earth orbit (such as the Space Shuttle) is due to the large number of smaller items of debris which encircle our planet. At higher altitudes, in the geostationary zone, the collision probabilities are much smaller in the present epoch but may become appreciable within a few decades.
