Collision induced absorption band appearing on the shortwave-length side of the forbidden mercury line (λ 227 nm) in the presence of argon is observed for the first time. Absolute absorption coefficient determined experimentally is compared with the theoretical band profile calculated using the recently derived semiempirical potential energy curve for the excited D31 state and the induced dipole transition moment.
