The radio structure and distribution of ionized gas in Mkn 78 was studied using long-slit spectroscopy and narrow-band imaging, primarily at forbidden O III 5007-A. The association of individual forbidden O-III components with radio structures is shown to be accounted for by a model in which radio-emitting components are moving with velocities of the order of 500 km/s, compressing and shock-heating the ambient medium. It is suggested that the weak forbidden O-III emission extending out to about 10 kpc to the west may be ionized by collimated UV radiation from the nucleus.
