The collection efficiency of targets for the capturing of different types of cometary dust is simulated in laboratory experiments and the results are evaluated for use in rendezvous missions to comets. Experimental and theoretical investigations are conducted for 'clean' targets, such as gold, but not for 'dirty' surfaces covered with silicate or hydrocarbon compounds such as vacuum grease. An electromagnetic accelerator is used to accelerate different types of dust in vacuum to velocities between 10 and 400 m/sec. The target is then examined under the microscope and a secondary ion mass spectrometer, a model of the laboratory carried onboard the spacecraft for in situ analysis. The adhesion of the dust grains at the target is evaluated experimentally in an ultracentrifuge.
