The expected form of the continuum spectrum from accretion-driven compact sources of nonthermal radiation, such as active galactic nuclei and quasars, is examined. The need for models of the radiation spectrum of these sources to include the significant amount of gas in their central continuum emitting regions is stressed. It is suggested that nonthermal radiation which occurs in the hot phase would be reprocessed by 'cool phase' clouds or filaments which would absorb energy by Compton heating and free-free absorption and reradiate it as a soft thermal component. It is concluded that the presence of a UV bump does not require any primary power production that is essentially thermal.
