The presence of dust particles residing at very low temperatures (Td< 18 K) has been hypothesised for a long time. The predictions were based on assumed properties of dust particles in the infrared combined with plausible conditions of the ISM in dense regions. Nevertheless, our observational picture of the cold dust component in the ISM is still poor despite the accessibility of photometric windows in the far-infrared and sub-mm wavelength range where cold dust emission should be detectable. We review long wavelength observations (λ> 100 μm) of the diffuse ISM, dense regions, cloud cores, and normal galaxies. A comparison is given between the different observations in terms of dust temperatures Td and power in the far-infrared emissivity β.
