During the last few decades, new experimental data on the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer have been published. According to these data, in the atmospheric boundary layer, in spite of its strong turbulence, the ordered roll vortices often exist, with their horizontal axis being directed approximately along the direction of the mean current and their scales compared with the depth of the boundary layer. Numerous studies show that these roll vortices are rather long-lived, contain a major portion of the turbulent energy, and play a leading role in the transport of heat, moisture and other substances through the boundary layer. The paper presents a review of experimental and theoretical works concerning research on the characteristics of the ordered roll vortices and conditions of their formation in the atmospheric boundary layer.
