The interaction between stars and interstellar gas is explicitly included in an extension of the stochastic self-propagating star formation model, and an oscillating mode is discovered, in addition to that of constant star formation previously found, in which both the star formation rate and active gas density are periodic functions of time. The oscillations are found to range from almost sinusoidal behavior to regular bursting, and it is noted that the appearance of two-armed global spiral patterns frequently accompanies the oscillations. These patterns are smooth, massive structures which resemble grand design patterns and contrast the many-armed and more filamentary patterns produced in the constant mode. One-armed patterns and ring structures are also produced.
