Luna-20 samples of metamorphosized highland breccia contain cohenite, an iron-and-nickel carbide, only at the periphery of large metal separates in the form of kamacite. X-ray spectral microanalysis and magnetic powder photography were used to determine chemical and elementary cell characteristics. The chemical composition, the crystal lattice period, and the domain structure of lunar, terrestrial, and meteoritic cohenite are similar. A model for cohenite formation is proposed; the subsolidus process involves diffusion of elements associated with a carbon-containing gamma phase of metallic iron.
