Infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations of IC 1848 from two of the instruments aboard COBE are used to derive physical properties of the dust and gas in the diffuse H II region and in the molecular clouds heated by the cluster of O stars. With its 42(') times 42(') instantaneous field of view, the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) provides 9 independent spectral energy distributions from various parts of the region covering the spectral range from 1.25 to 240 microns in 10 bands. Maps of the dust temperature and column density derived from the DIRBE far infrared observations are presented. A spectrum from the Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) shows strong [C II] and weak [N II] line emission.
