Basic concept and design problems associated with the coarse sun sensor (CSS) and earth horizon sensor of the IRAS satellite are discussed. The coarse sun sensor must detect the sun as the satellite emerges from the eclipse so that the fine sun sensor can be pointed to the sun, and the coarse sun sensor must also detect the beginning of the eclipse period. The CSS consists of six identical sensor units that cover the whole sky. Each unit consists of a silicon photocell placed behind a collimator system with a meniscus lens. The earth horizon sensor provides two different fields of view in which incident radiation energy is concentrated on separate detectors, and the difference signal is a measure of the satellite's rotation about the z-axis.
