Approximate equations of motion based on an assumption of weak interbody gravitational fields and slow orbital motions, known as the post-Newtonian approximation, are used here to study the orbital evolution of coalescing binary sytems of compact objects. The gravitational radiation emitted by the system is determined using post-Newtonian gravitational waveforms derived by Wagoner and Will (1976). The gravitational-radiation recoil is calculated.
