The results of observations conducted on the interacting edge-on galaxy NGC 4631 are discussed. The IRAM 30-m telescope with a resolution of 13 arcsec was employed to study the 12CO (J = 2 - 1) line emission. The parameters adopted for observation are described in detail. Comparisons with 12CO (J = 1 - 0) data are also presented. A ringlike disk of heavily concentrated molecular gas is reported to have a radius of 1 kpc and a practically rigid rotation. Its motion is described by a position-velocity diagram, and several velocity constituents are evinced by individual line profiles. Spiral arms within the gas disk are shown to be the sources of the velocity components. A line-ratio distribution results from comparison between the two sets of observation data. An average line ratio of unity is found, suggesting that the gas in the disk is optically thick, but is found to be thin or opaque (and therefore heated and disturbed) near the outer region. A description of the molecular disk and the spiral arms is presented.
