During the embedded phase of pre-main sequence stellar evolution, a young object is surrounded by an envelope and a circumstellar disk. Since these young disks are still likely accreting material from the envelope, any differences between them and older CTTS disks may yield clues as to how the disk grows and the envelope dissipates. However, the chemical and temperature structure of gas in young disks is poorly constrained observationally. We present high-resolution M-band spectra of CO fundamental emission from embedded young objects obtained with CRIRES on the VLT. High spectral resolution is required to discriminate any CO emission from optically-thick CO absorption in the envelope and cloud. CO emission is detected from most objects in our sample, though with a wide range of line strengths. Several non-detections lack significance. Emission from higher vibrational levels and in CO isotopologues is also detected from some embedded objects. The spatial and spectral properties for the CO emission from most objects is consistent with being produced in the disk, although some optically-thick CO emission can be seen in outflows. We discuss similarities and differences between CO fundamental emission seen from embedded objects and that seen from CTTSs.
