An understanding of the influence of environment on both AGN activity and star formation is crucial to determine the physical mechanism(s) regulating the coeval growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the galaxies in which they reside. Deep multi-wavelength surveys are now enabling such studies up to z 1 by providing least biased samples of AGNs, a characterization of the underlying parent sample of galaxies, and an assessment of the local environment. We present results based on 10k zCOSMOS galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts and XMM-Newton observations that identify those galaxies hosting X-ray selected AGNs and include the obscured population. We specifically measure star formation rates of AGN host galaxies using the [OII] emission line and an empirical correction for the AGN contribution. We find that galaxies harboring AGNs have significant levels of ongoing star formation reaching up to 100 solar masses per year and are evolving in a manner equivalent to non-active, star-forming galaxies. Our results indicate that the relative growth rate of SMBHs and stellar mass of their host galaxies have significant dispersion at these redshifts thus indicating an intermittant scenario that will eventually settle on the local SMBH-bulge relations. Furthermore, AGNs are shown to exhibit an environmental dependency similar to star formation based on the zCOSMOS three-dimensional map of the galaxy distribution.
