We have mapped several nearby galaxies in the CO(4-3) line transition with the Heinrich-Hertz-Telescope on Mt. Graham, Arizona, during an excellent weather period in December 1998. Here we report on our observations of M 51 and NGC 6946. The results suggest a concentration of highly excited CO gas to the nuclei of these galaxies. Moreover, in both objects CO(4-3) line emission was also detected for the first time in the spiral arms, several kiloparsecs away from the centre.
