Numerous sets of standard interference filters for comet photometry are now being used for measuring selected emissions of comets. Due to both the finite value of their bandpasses and the Swings effect, an "effective" excitation rate must be computed to convert observed brightnesses into column densities. This effect is studied in detail for the CN filters; some conclusions concerning the use of C2 and C3 filters are also deduced.
