The distribution in depth of clusters of galaxies with large velocity dispersions, as measured in the optical band, may be consistent with approximate uniformity. In x-rays, preliminary evidence suggested a substantial dearth of luminous cluster sources in the past which has now been confirmed. X-ray and optical luminosities are linked to the dynamical masses. The (comoving) mass distribution is considered. It is concluded that fast x-ray and slower optical anti evolution at redshift z approximately equal to 0.5 will point to direct hierarchical collapse of biased overdensities in a dense universe to produce structures with increasing gas content and temperature. Additional implications include L/L0 proportional to M2/3, only limited cooling flows, and Fe/H decreasing towards us.
