Hot, x-ray emitting gas in clusters of galaxies distorts the spectrum of the microwave background radiation by Compton upscattering. This Sunyaev-Zel'dovich distortion contains information about the radial component of the peculiar motion of the cluster relative to the (inertial) frame of microwave background, in addition to information on the y-parameter. A carefully designed experiment to measure the SZ signal from clusters at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths is potentially a powerful probe of the peculiar velocity field of Abell clusters. We discuss the limitations on extracting the peculiar motion signal imposed by galactic and extragalactic foreground sources of contamination and methods to overcome these.
