Magnetic, plasma and wave data obtained by CLUSTER are used to analyse the very low frequency oscillations of the plasmasheet. A statistical analysis of a data set corresponding to 5 `tail' seasons of CLUSTER (from years 2001 to 2005)has been performed. For this purpose, `events' corresponding to the detection of large quasi-monochromatic fluctuations with periods ranging from a few seconds to a few tens of seconds have been systematically identified and compared to other types of `events', as Bursty Bulk Flows (BBF) and sudden increases in the spectral density of higher frequency electromagnetic waves. We show that these different types of `events' are well correlated and, more specifically, that the ULF oscillations are often observed in conjunction with flow reversals. Their properties and their possible interpretation in terms of `kink- like' and `sausage-like' fluctuations of the sheet are investigated. It is suggested that these ULF `kink/sausage' undulations are closely linked to the development of a strong activity in the current sheet. We then compare these observations with theoretical results deduced from a model of the MHD linear response of the plasma sheet. This model allows for quantitative estimates of the amplitude of MHD modes that may propagate in the sheet, as functions of initial arbitrary perturbations. The limits of the model and the connection with more complex kinetic models are discussed.
