Cluster four spacecraft magnetic field observations of the quasi-perpendicular terrestrial bowshock reveal variations in both space and time. On the typical formation scale of around 600 km, the large scale field magnitude profile through shocks was largely similar at all four spacecraft. In contrast, whistler and ion cyclotron wave activity up and downstream was generally uncorrelated, although statistically similar at different spacecraft. We present data from a number of shock crossings in the first year of operations, and show examples of the up and downstream wave activity. Some events suggest that downstream shock and wave structure is correlated on the separation scale, and that differences between spacecraft are due to them sampling the shock at slightly different times. We also discuss other phenomena, such as: amplitude modulation of downstream waves observed at all four spacecraft; changes in downstream waves as a result of shock acceleration; and rapid changes in shock character as a result of changes in solar wind conditions.
