In Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), nature has given us exquisite tools to survey the cosmos. Through monthly deep imaging of cluster fields using Magellan (with IMACS), we will discover a large number of SNe, including SNe in the clusters as well as background SNe that are measurably gravitationally lensed. The cluster SN sample will yield SN Ia and core-collapse SN rates, with important applications to constraining SN Ia progenitor models and the star formation and metal enrichment histories of the Universe. The lensed SN sample will be truly novel, providing constraints on dark matter models through a measure of small-scale substructure in the clusters. A targeted cluster SN search, to deep limits, is the most efficient way to find these supernovae. Here we propose to use Gemini to follow up our cluster and lensed SN discoveries, with GMOS optical spectroscopy and NIRI J-band photometry, to provide supernova typing and rest-frame I-band light curves.
