Cometary dust particles are known to exhibit similar linear polarization phase curves, with a faint minimum at small phase angles, and a wide positive branch with a near 90 deg maximum. However, the polarization is usually lower when the distance to the nucleus is smaller than a few thousand of kilometers. The evolution of the scattering properties with the distance to the nucleus and with the wavelength is documented through both in situ observations (comets 1P and 26P) and remote observations (Comets 22P, 47P, 81P, C/1990 K1 and C/1995 O1). Clues to changes in bulk size, structure, and albedo of the particles are provided through an intercomparison of dust models, light scattering codes, and measurements in a ground based or reduced gravity laboratory (PROGRA2 and CODAG-LSU experiments). This work was supported by the French PNP and CNES.
