Astronomers are loading their equipment, cameras, and telescopes onto high-flying airplanes to escape the humidity of the lower layers of Earth's atmosphere, which distorts and absorbs infrared energy. Telescope studies in infrared light provide information about on the chemical make-up of the universe, galaxies, and the birth of stars. Convair 990s, Lear Jets, C-141s, and F-18s have been used as airborne telescope platforms.
