Clusters of galaxies represent sensitive probes of the formation, evolution and distribution of structure at the largest spatial and mass scales. X-ray selection currently yields the least biased cluster samples allowing large-scale structure studies that complement earlier and ongoing work based on galaxies as tracers. However, existing X-ray cluster samples, although increasingly sizeable, still exclude the historical `zone of avoidance' at |b|< 20° defined by much earlier work in the optical waveband. The resulting limited sky coverage of X-ray flux limited cluster samples seriously hampers studies of large scale structure and streaming motions using clusters as tracers. Using ROSAT All-Sky Survey data we have taken advantage of the fact that hard X-rays can penetrate the plane where extinction and obscuration make optical cluster searches inefficient. So far we have spectroscopically confirmed 106 clusters at |b|< 20°, 80% of which were previously unknown, using imaging and spectroscopic observations with the UH2.2m and CTIO 1.5m telescopes. We propose the continuation of the southern part of the CIZA survey, specifically in the Great Attractor region, to complete this successful program and to finally close the Galactic gap in the observed distribution of clusters in the sky. In 2000/1 this proposal was awarded the same amount of time as requested here. However, due to a series of unfortunate circumstances beyond our control very little useful data were gathered. This proposal is an updated resubmission of the one approved last year.
