Variations of equivalent widths of absorption lines and of the radial velocities with the phase of the orbital period have been calculated for stars in a binary system with an account of the absorption component originating in a common spherically symmetric envelope having a radial opacity gradient. It is shown that a general expansion or contraction of the envelope may give rise to the distortion of the sinusoidal shape of radial velocity curves which is conventionally interpreted in terms of gas streams or is ascribed to the effect of the elliptical orbit.
