The pump mechanism of astronomical OH masers is discussed in view of two new experimental results on the photodissociation of H2O in the VUV and on the inelastic collisions of OH with H2. The experimental results rule out the most favored collisional pump mechanisms for astronomical OH masers and yield two new pump mechanisms. A comparison of features of stellar and interstellar masers leads to the suggestion that most interstellar masers in regions of star formation are pumped by H2O photodissociation, whereas stellar masers may be pumped by inelastic OH-H2 collisions. For the H2O pump mechanism a specific maser model including H2O and OH photodissociation as well as IR relaxation is presented and simple results are discussed.
