A fast statistical classification method is presented which makes it possible to (1) recognize homogeneous classes of objects without any a priori knowledge of the taxonomical units; (2) identify class boundaries; and (3) assign a new object of unidentified nature to a given class with a definite probability. In case of X-ray sources and dwarf novae, good agreement is found between the proposed G-mode classification technique and the classification of Brandt et al. (1978).
