A classification scheme of meteor noises is presented that relates types of noise to the size and behavior of meteorites. The method of investigation relies on compilations of eyewitness reports rather than observation. Meteor acoustics are classified as sonic boom, electrophonic or anomalous noise, fracture noises, and completion or impact noises. The scheme is illustrated by a hypothetical example. Explanations are given for unusual noises that are often dismissed as imaginary as well as for the disagreement between observers at different locations regarding the sequence in which sound effects are heard, and for observers in certain locations completely failing to hear loud noises reported by other observers. Finally, the usefulness of meteor acoustics is assessed.
