This paper is concerned with the escape-probability method (EPM) of radiative transfer, wherein the net radiative bracket rho is equated to the escape probability Pe. It is shown that Sobolev's (1947) long-standing derivation of the EPM for a differentially moving medium lacks internal consistency and consequently is invalid. An alternative derivation is presented, providing new insight into the EPM. Sobolev's derivation, firstly of the volume-average equality for a region V of a moving medium, is based upon the proposition that photons emitted within that region are either absorbed therein or else escape the medium altogether. The inconsistency arises because this proposition is more likely to be valid the larger the region V is, whereas the subsequent assumption of uniformity necessary for the volume-average equality to apply locally is more likely to be valid the smaller the region V is, with the same scale-length (the inverse velocity gradient) applying in both cases.
