An analysis of the circumstellar medium of SN 1987A by hard radiation following the SN outburst is presented, with particular emphasis on circumstellar UV and optical emission lines from the SN. The observations are well modeled by a circumstellar shell ionized by the strong soft X-ray burst during the first hours after the explosion. An updated analysis of the calculations by Fransson and Lundqvist (1989) gives a radiation temperature for the outburst of (3-6) x 100,000 K. The number of ionizing photons above 100 eV is about 10 exp 56. The present calculations, especially the good agreement between the corresponding ionization stages of C III, N III and O III, justify the abundance analysis of Fransson et al. (1989) and confirm the importance of CNO processing in the progenitor. A helium-to-hydrogen ratio of 0.06-0.2 is derived for the UV shell, which is consistent with a helium abundance close to solar, as well as with that resulting from CNO processing.
