The properties of the circumstellar dust around the star HR 4049 were investigated. A large UV deficiency was found, which does not show any sign of an absorption dip near 2175 A. It is shown that the dust particles responsible for the UV extinction are also responsible for the IR excess emission. The IRAS Low Resolution spectrum shows the presence of emission features at about 8.6 microns and at 11.3 microns, suggesting that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) grains constitute part of the dust around HR 4049. These PAHs do not produce a 2175 A absorption feature. It is concluded that the circumstellar material around HR 4049 contains hydrocarbons in the form of small grains or large molecules. This could explain the UV extinction and the lack of a 2175 A bump while being consistent with what is known of the composition of the circumstellar material.
