High resolution spectroscopy at 2.3 micrometers of the remarkable variable FG Sge, taken in 1992 shortly before a sudden 3 mag visual extinction event, reveals CO lines originating in two circumstellar shells. One shell is at approximately the stellar velocity and has an excitation temperature of approximately 1800 K. The second is expanding at 21 km/s with an excitation temperature of approximately 900 K. The shells are at 2 and 11 R*, respectively. This renewed Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB)-type mass loss appears to be part of the transformation of FG Sge into a R CrB star.
